Haley with Hemangiosarcoma

Haley is One In A Million. How Integrative Medicine Helped Her Beat The Odds Against Hemangiosarcoma

Haley is a 14-year-old golden retriever and a cancer survivor/thriver. She was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma subsequent to a catastrophic spleen tumor burst in June 2012 when she was 13. She spent four days at the emergency hospital and had several blood transfusions, but she recovered through an integrative approach of traditional and alternative medicine. We knew that the prognosis for Haley was not great: one to three months post-surgery, but we decided to take a chance and make those months the best they could be.

Haley is fed a homemade raw, unprocessed diet. Our integrative veterinarian strongly feels that this excellent nutrition contributed to her speedy recovery.

Haley’s treatment involved over 15 individual steps that supported her nutritionally as we built up her immune system and assisted her body in removal of toxins. Treatment agents included Traditional Chinese Herbs, palladium-lipoic acid complex, medical mushrooms, balanced fatty acids, medical adsorbants, western herbal anti-inflammatories, cellular support, vitamins E, C, B-12, and coconut oil.

Basic science shows the potential benefits for these agents, but the evidence base for these agents needs to be developed further. It is our hope that groups like the AHVM Foundation can fund such research and that the result will be improved outcomes for all patients suffering from such chronic diseases.

Haley’s recovery was challenging, but she did it and even went on to become a certified therapy dog just three months post-event in September 2012. She now visits a senior center once a week where she shares her smiles.
